The Volvo Ocean Race

Back in 1973-74, the first race took place as the Whitbread Round The World Race, testing the crews against some of the most ferocious elements that man can encounter. Until today, it remains an extraordinary race, and once seen, will never be forgotten!

Shooting the Volvo Ocean Race, during it’s stop over Leg here in Auckland, here’s some of the shots I captured in March 2012 & to all of you at The Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, thank you!

Leg 5 of the VOR has proven for many to be the most difficult ever experienced, on that expanse of sea, in its history, and for any of the boats still hoping to make it across the line, either sailing or by being shipped… congratulations to you
most extraordinary men of the Sea.

Third place was taken by Groupama, after carrying out repairs in Punta del Este.

Fourth place was taken by Camper with Emirates Team NZ, adding 15 points to their score, after repairs on its bow in Puerto Montt, and the long sail to finish in Itajaí to join the rest of the fleet.

Retired from Leg 5…

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing retired from leg 5 & will be shipped to Itajaí.
Team Sanya retired too & is presently being shipped to Savannah, then hoping to sail to Miami to continue racing.

There’s a whole lot of passion and dedication involved in this racing! Well done everyone!
